Canadian Sports Innovation Award 2022
On December 9, 2022, I won the Canadian Sports Innovation Award 2022 for best work in sports innovation at the 2022 Canadian sports science and sport innovation conference (SPIN 2022).
There were six finalists for the Dr. Gord Sleivert Young Investigator Awards in SPIN 2022. People at the conference chose the top 3 best works (mine included) to receive the same awards!
I presented a summary of the final results of my Ph.D. research in automatic sports video analysis where I created a system that uses computer vision and deep learning for automatic marker-less kinematic analysis of diving and diver's 2D pose estimation using a single and fixed camera.
The new proposed solutions, including a web system, can help coaches and integrated support teams collect and analyze data from diving videos.
The same artificial intelligence and computer vision system can be easily applied in different types of sports and provide a quick and precise way to automatically extract athletes' trajectories, calculate distances in the trajectories of athletes, estimate kinematic metrics in sports, athletes' 2D posture, the trajectory of the athletes' centre of mass, athletes' velocity and acceleration, angles estimation in the athlete's arms, legs and trunk, and more.
I would like to express my very great appreciation to my supervisor Carlos Vazquez, my co-supervisor Rachid Aissaoui, and Mathieu Charbonneau (INS Québec sport biomechanist). They made it possible to carry out this work with discussions, valuable and constructive suggestions and fundamental ideas.
This work was financed by INS-Québec, Mitacs, Own The Podium (OTP), and Diving Canada. Thank you very much for your financial support.
